Abstract

The sugarcane sector plays a vital role in Karnataka’s agrarian economy, yet its marketing systems face persistent challenges such as price volatility, supply-chain inefficiencies, delayed payments, market information asymmetry, and sustainability concerns. This study examines the potential of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance the sustainable development of sugarcane marketing systems in Karnataka. The research explores how AI-based tools-such as predictive analytics, demand forecasting, smart logistics, digital market platforms, and real-time price intelligence-can improve market efficiency, transparency, and farmer income stability. Using field-level observations, stakeholder analysis, and secondary data evaluation, the study assesses current marketing constraints and evaluates AI-driven solutions for optimizing procurement, transportation, storage, and mill operations. The findings suggest that AI integration can reduce market uncertainties, improve decision-making, enhance value-chain coordination, and support environmentally and economically sustainable marketing practices. However, successful adoption depends on digital infrastructure development, farmer awareness, policy support, and institutional coordination. The study concludes that AI-enabled marketing reforms can significantly strengthen sugarcane value chains and contribute to inclusive and sustainable agricultural development in Karnataka.
