Tangible Heritage, Intangible Culture: Preservation of Monuments and Cultural Continuity in India
Main Article Content
Abstract
India’s rich civilizational legacy is embodied in its tangible heritage—monuments, temples, forts, and architectural marvels—and its intangible cultural expressions such as rituals, oral traditions, performing arts, and traditional knowledge systems. This paper explores the dynamic interplay between these two dimensions of heritage, emphasizing how the preservation of physical monuments contributes to the continuity of cultural identity and collective memory. It critically examines the challenges posed by urbanization, tourism, and climate change to heritage conservation, while highlighting policy frameworks, community participation, and technological innovations that support sustainable preservation. Through case studies of iconic sites like Hampi, Varanasi, and Sanchi, the research illustrates how safeguarding tangible heritage can reinforce intangible cultural practices, ensuring that India’s pluralistic traditions remain vibrant and relevant in the modern era. The paper advocates for an integrated approach to heritage management that bridges the material and immaterial, fostering resilience and cultural continuity across generations.
