Artificial Intelligence in Language Learning and Communication: Opportunities, Challenges, and Pedagogical Implications

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming language learning and communication by offering adaptive, personalized, and context-aware learning experiences. AI-powered tools such as intelligent tutoring systems, natural language processing applications, chatbots, and speech recognition platforms provide learners with real-time feedback, tailored learning pathways, and enhanced opportunities for autonomous practice. These innovations have expanded access to language learning while improving skills in vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and intercultural communication. However, the integration of AI also introduces significant challenges: ethical concerns including data privacy, issues of equitable access, the risk of technological over-reliance, and the potential erosion of human interaction in pedagogical contexts. This paper explores the dual nature of AI’s role in language education by examining its potential and pitfalls, and discussing key pedagogical implications for teachers, learners, and curriculum designers. It argues for a balanced approach that leverages AI as a supportive complement to human-centered language teaching.
