G.S. Shivarudrappa and His Contribution to Modern Kannada Poetry

Abstract

G. S. Shivarudrappa, popularly known as GSS, is one of the most prominent poets and literary critics in modern Kannada literature. His poetry occupies an important place in the development of twentieth-century Kannada literary tradition because of its lyrical beauty, philosophical depth, and humanistic outlook. GSS successfully combined the ideals of the Navodaya literary movement with modern poetic sensibilities, thereby creating a unique literary voice. His poems reflect themes such as love, nature, spirituality, social consciousness, cultural identity, and emotional sensitivity. Through simple yet powerful language, he explored the inner experiences of human life and the changing values of modern society.
This research paper examines the major themes, poetic techniques, and literary contributions of G. S. Shivarudrappa in the context of modern Kannada literature. The paper analyses how his poetry represents harmony between tradition and modernity. It also studies the influence of Kuvempu and Kannada cultural heritage on his writings. Special attention is given to his use of symbolism, musicality, and philosophical reflection, which made his poems both intellectually rich and emotionally appealing. In addition to his creative works, the paper highlights his contribution as a literary critic, teacher, and scholar who strengthened Kannada literary studies through academic research and critical writings. The study concludes that GSS played a major role in enriching Kannada poetry by preserving human values and cultural consciousness during a period of rapid social and literary change. His works continue to inspire readers because of their universal appeal, artistic excellence, and relevance to contemporary society.
